Why does silicon production require uniform wood chips?

Share:

In the silicon industry, especially for industrial or Silicon metal, manufacturers use uniform wood chips or charcoal. They keep electric furnace smelting stable and efficient. The specific reasons are as follows:

1. Ensuring airflow and uniform material sinking in the electric furnace

Wood chips mainly serve to increase the airflow of the furnace charge in submerged arc furnaces. Uniform wood chips create even gaps in the charge.

This lets reducing gases (CO) rise smoothly. It also helps silica and carbon-based reducers sink evenly to the reaction zone. This prevents the charge from caking or bridging, avoiding the phenomenon of “furnace suffocation.”

2. Consistent reaction rate and improved reduction efficiency

Silicon production is a reduction reaction. When wood chips vary in size, big and small pieces react at different speeds. This throws off the carbon-to-silica ratio. Uniform chips keep the ratio balanced, leading to a faster reaction and higher output.

3. Uniform heat distribution and reduced energy consumption

A uniform charge layer helps stabilize the electrical resistance of the furnace charge in the electric furnace. If wood chips vary in size, electrical resistance in the furnace also varies, causing uneven heat distribution. This can overheat some areas while others stay too cold, wasting energy and harming product quality and yield.

4. Stable furnace conditions and prevention of severe fuming

Uniformly sized wood chips maintain a charge layer with good airflow, ensuring smooth smelting operations. They prevent issues such as severe fuming caused by excessive furnace pressure or slag blockage.

5.What machine could make output uniform size ?

We recommend our drum wood chipper, disc wood chipper.

Disk wood chipper JP800,JP1410: high-quality, more uniform wood chips, if your material most is log,

Drum wood chipperJP218: makes uniform wood chips, but not as good as a disc chipper. Use it for mixed material, like logs, branches, brush, bark, and veneer waste.
